Sun-Grown Medical Cannabis Facility Launches in Tenerife

19.08.2026

The Canary Islands have officially entered the medical cannabis sector with the launch of the archipelago's first authorized cultivation facility, fully approved by the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS). Developed by Nivaria Tech Arico S.L. in Granadilla de Abona on the south coast of Tenerife, the project combines high-tech pharmaceutical indoor standards with the region's unique natural climate.

The core innovation of the facility is its total elimination of artificial lighting (LED and HPS lamps) during the flowering phase. Due to their geographic proximity to Africa and the influence of trade winds, the Canary Islands enjoy a stable year-round photoperiod with nearly equal 12-hour light cycles and minimal thermal fluctuations. Direct exposure to natural ultraviolet solar rays stimulates the production of rare therapeutic compounds, including THC-V. This rare cannabinoid acts as a natural modulator of THC's psychoactive effects, preserving the plant's full therapeutic potential while minimizing side effects for patients.

The infrastructure and security systems strictly adhere to the standards outlined in Real Decreto 903/2025. According to reports from national broadcaster RTVC, the site features automated climate control, a three-meter security perimeter with thermal cameras, 24/7 armed personnel, and a reinforced storage bunker. For post-harvest processing, the company utilizes automated equipment from the U.S. alongside a rare "cold disinfection" system that sanitizes the flower without heat or radiation, preserving its natural terpene profile.

Key highlights and operational parameters of the Nivaria Tech facility:

  • 6 Harvests Annually: The stable natural photoperiod allows for full crop rotation every 60 days.
  • Minimal Carbon Footprint: Harnessing solar energy drastically reduces power consumption compared to traditional European indoor facilities.
  • Pharmaceutical-Grade Security: Access to sensitive areas requires biometric verification, and all plant waste is destroyed under strict supervision in a dedicated crematorium.
  • End-to-End Traceability: Every plant is individually tracked from clone to final batch using custom management software.

Nivaria Tech is currently producing three consecutive validation batches, a mandatory requirement by AEMPS to prove chemical stability and batch-to-batch consistency. Upon successful completion, the facility will obtain EU GMP certification under Volume 4 of the European Commission Rules. This qualification will enable the company to export active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), standardized extracts, and raw materials to pharmacy networks across the European Union.

The launch of this facility in Tenerife demonstrates how combining optimal climate conditions with advanced pharmaceutical technology can establish new, sustainable standards for the European medical cannabis market.
