Spanish Startup Authorized for Production Launch Validation

While domestic regulatory debates on the scope of medical cannabis continue within Spain, local businesses are navigating strict state channels to integrate into the wider European market. The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS) has granted authorization to Taima Growth S.L. for the cultivation of Cannabis sativa L. plants.

According to the official government registry on the agency's website, the company has joined a highly exclusive group of domestic enterprises—with only five such positions currently listed—authorized under a specific category: "for obtaining the lots necessary for the validation of the manufacturing process of narcotic active pharmaceutical ingredients for medical purposes."

The Business Perspective: Requirements and Investment

Securing this authorization required more than seven years of development. As Mo Alyasini, founder and CEO of the company, noted in an interview with El Correo de Burgos: "The process has been very difficult, but we have achieved it." According to Alyasini, Taima Growth has become one of only four actively operating authorized companies in Spain to reach this status.

The nature of Spanish regulation dictates that supervisory authorities require applicants to demonstrate full infrastructure readiness, a qualified technical team, and even pre-agreed contracts with international importers before any final ruling is made. "It is a model where you must have everything finalized before you begin operating, and you assume a significant amount of risk from the very start," Alyasini emphasizes.

According to internal company data, the project is built upon the following parameters:

  • Investment: More than €3 million has been invested in the project, funded entirely by Spanish private backers with roots in agriculture, renewable energy, and finance.
  • Location: The fully controlled indoor facility is located in the Ribera region of the Burgos province. The site was chosen after evaluating more than 200 alternatives across Spain; coastal regions were ruled out due to excess heat, while the north presented humidity levels that were too high. The cold, dry climate of Burgos proved ideal.
  • Technical Output: Fully automated indoor environmental controls are designed to support between three and five harvests per year, ensuring the strict batch-to-batch chemical consistency required by pharmaceutical buyers.

What the Current Status Means in Practice

The authorization granted by the authorities is not a commercial license for the open sale or export of products. The company’s current status provides the legal right to initiate the process validation phase.

To achieve a full commercial rollout and obtain international GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) certification, Taima Growth must cultivate and submit three consecutive production batches to the regulator. This step is mandatory to prove the complete homogeneity and repeatability of the technological process. The harvested flower will eventually be sent to certified laboratories for the extraction of the active therapeutic compounds. Company management expects to complete these validation procedures by early next year.

Context: An Export-Driven Focus

Targeting future export markets with more developed regulatory frameworks, such as Germany and the UK, remains a necessary and standard practice for most high-tech Spanish cannabis projects.

Spain maintains a highly restrictive approach to domestic medical cannabis dispensation. The current legal framework (including the provisions of Royal Decree 903/2025) strictly limits medical cannabis to standardized, magistral formulations prepared for a narrow pool of patients within hospital environments. As company management points out, patient access in Spain remains significantly limited compared to other European nations, compelling domestic producers to focus almost exclusively on international markets.
